Health Care Advocate and Entrepreneur Stefany Shaheen Launches Congressional Campaign

A Lifelong Granite Stater, Shaheen Vows To Fight Back Against Trump, Elon, and RFK Jr.’s Assault on Health Care

Stefany Shaheen, a health care advocate and entrepreneur, today announced she will be a candidate for Congress in New Hampshire’s First District, vowing to stand up for New Hampshire families against the assault on their health care by Donald Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Republicans in Congress.

“For 15 years I’ve been a fierce fighter for medical research and innovation in health care to help people like my daughter, Elle, battling chronic, life-threatening diseases, like diabetes. So, when I see Donald Trump crushing medical research and slashing health care for kids, seniors and veterans to give tax breaks to billionaires and corporations, I have to fight back. That’s why I’m running for Congress,” said Shaheen. “No one fights harder than a mom for her kids, and that’s how I will fight for your family too. I’ll never give up.”

Stefany is the mother of four children and her eldest daughter, Elle, was eight years old when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The disease’s relentless demands moved Stefany to co-found Good Measures, a small business that provides clinical and nutritional support to people living with chronic conditions. Stefany is a named inventor on the company’s patents in the United States and internationally.

Stefany wrote a book about her family’s journey, Elle & Coach, which became a New York Times best seller.

Now, Stefany is part of a ground-breaking biotech initiative in Manchester’s historic millyard to advance biomanufacturing and develop regenerative treatments for some of the toughest health problems – from treating injured war fighters to diabetes, lung disease, and more.

Stefany’s public service started close to home. In 2013, she was elected to serve on the Portsmouth City Council, where she helped tackle a parking shortage that was threatening local businesses. When PFAS contamination was discovered in the local water supply, she helped to ensure screening for those exposed to the dangerous forever chemicals and served on the Community Taskforce providing oversight of the clean-up. As Chair of the Portsmouth Police Commission, she advocated for resources to protect public safety.

This week, Stefany Shaheen will be traveling across the district to talk with people about their most pressing concerns, and share with them her fight and determination to make a difference for every family in the First Congressional District. People who have worked with Stefany are supporting her campaign because they know she will be an effective advocate fighting and making a difference for New Hampshire families.

“When PFAS contamination was discovered in the Pease Tradeport drinking water, Stefany Shaheen was there for us. You could feel how deeply she related to the parents at Pease, who were worried about their children and the possible health effects from drinking contaminated water. Our fight was her fight, and she helped get the PFAS blood testing program, create the City’s Community Advisory Board, and advocate for the first national PFAS Health Study to include our families,” said Andrea Amico, Founder of Testing for Pease.

“The lack of parking downtown was hurting local businesses like mine. The problem was clear to everyone, but building consensus on how to solve it was a lot more challenging. Taking on tough community issues like this is usually a thankless job. But Stefany jumped right in, listened to our concerns and acted on that feedback. She’s made a real difference for the City,” said Jay McSharry, Portsmouth small business leader.

“Stefany Shaheen became Chair of the Police Commission during an incredibly challenging time. We were navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought new threats to public safety. She was a steady and strong force always fighting to ensure that we had the resources we needed while engaging and informing the community,” said Mark Newport, Portsmouth Police Chief.

“Chronic illnesses are an ever-increasing health and financial burden on families, businesses, and the government. Stefany understands this challenge from both a policy perspective and on a personal level because of her own family’s experience. She is focused on finding new solutions to some of the toughest health care problems, solutions that will improve quality of life and reduce long-term health care costs for millions of Americans. As a doctor, medical researcher and the father of someone living with type 1 diabetes, I am particularly grateful for the urgency and intelligence with which she approaches this work,” said Dr. Alan Moses, Joslin’s Diabetes Center Board of Trustees.

“Coach Stefany believed in our ability and the importance she placed on details, determination, hard work, and preparation helped our team make state volleyball history. Long after my high school career, Coach Stefany’s support continued, always celebrating my achievements and reminding me that the values learned from sport transcend into every aspect of life. That is the kind caring and committed person she is,” said Corinne Lamond, former Portsmouth High School volleyball player.
